Every camera we review receives a Reliability Score out of 100, built from ten criteria scored one to ten and weighted equally. The same ten criteria apply in every category, so scores are comparable across the whole site.
Why the score is called Reliability and not Performance
Because we do not test cameras in the field, and a score named for performance would imply that we do.
The Reliability Score aggregates three kinds of evidence: published independent test data where it exists, manufacturer specifications clearly flagged as claimed rather than verified, and failure patterns reported by owners at scale. It is a synthesis, not a measurement, and the name reflects that.

What a Reliability Score actually means
A score in the 90s means we found little to fault. A score in the 40s or 50s is a warning, and we publish those without softening them. If every camera on a site scores well, the scores carry no information.
What Trail Camera Help cannot currently verify
This is the section most review sites leave out, so we will be direct about it.
We have not measured anything ourselves, and we never will. No figure on this site comes from a test we ran. Beyond that, independent measurement does not exist for every camera on the market. Where we have not found published test data for a specific model, criteria 1 and 2 — Trigger Speed and Detection Range Accuracy — rest on the manufacturer’s own numbers, and we label them as manufacturer-claimed on the page where they appear rather than quietly scoring them as though they were verified.
The practical consequence is that a Reliability Score is a well-sourced judgment, not a laboratory result. If you want measured trigger speeds and detection distances for a specific camera, the people who produce them are linked below, and we would rather send you there than pretend the numbers are ours.
Where our specification data comes from
Independent measurement, where it exists, is cited and linked at the point of use. The most substantial public testing program in this category is run by TrailCamPro, who have tested since 2003 using purpose-built equipment that measures trigger speed to four thousandths of a second and a standardized walk test at ten-foot increments out to a hundred and twenty feet.
Where no independent measurement exists, the figure comes from the manufacturer and is labelled as such. Two specifications deserve particular caution: megapixel counts, which are frequently interpolated upward from a much smaller sensor, and detection range, which varies materially with air temperature — TrailCamPro note a camera’s range “could be substantially greater on a 32 degree winter day compared to a 90 degree summer day.”
How we handle corrections
Specifications change, data plans get repriced, and models get discontinued and relisted. If something here is wrong, email contact@trailcamerahelp.com and we will correct it and note the correction.
