Most trail camera faults come down to a short list of causes, and the same few keep appearing regardless of brand. This page is the starting point: identify your symptom, get the likely cause, and follow the link to the full fix.
Before anything else, three checks resolve a large share of problems on their own.

- Fit fresh lithium batteries. Not alkaline. Alkaline voltage sags progressively and much faster in cold, and the infrared flash is the highest-current component in the camera — so it fails first, while everything else still appears to work. More faults trace back to this than to any other single cause.
- Format the SD card in the camera, not on a computer, and check the write-protect switch on the side of the card.
- Confirm the camera is armed, not sitting in setup mode. Setup lets you change settings and does not take photos, and it is easy to walk away having left it there.

No photos at all, day or night
Usually the camera is in setup mode, the batteries are too weak to operate reliably, or the SD card is faulty, locked, or full. Settings can also silently prevent capture — a scheduled operating window, a time-lapse mode that ignores the motion sensor, or sensitivity set too low for warm weather.
Full fixes for a trail camera not taking pictures
Daytime photos work, night photos are black
Nearly always battery voltage. A camera can have enough power to run all day and not enough to fire the infrared flash, so it looks healthy and returns black frames after dark. Other causes: night mode disabled, a time-lapse mode that does not flash, or the subject sitting beyond flash range — which is shorter than detection range.
Full fixes for missing night photos
Night photos are completely white or heavily washed out
Something close to the lens is reflecting the infrared flash back into it — dust, pollen, a water film, internal condensation, or a spider web. Spiders build across trail camera lenses constantly, and a web an inch from the glass lights up like a snowstorm. Clean the lens, the IR array and the sensor window, then check the seal and desiccant.
Night photos are blurred or streaked
This is motion blur, not a fault. At night the shutter stays open longer to gather light, and a walking animal moves during that exposure. Reposition so animals cross the frame at an angle rather than moving through it, frame where they pause rather than travel, and avoid burst modes.
Photos of empty trail with nothing in them
Two different problems. If frames are genuinely empty, vegetation in front of the lens is triggering the sensor as it warms and moves — clear a corridor about ten feet deep. If you can see an animal leaving the edge of the frame, the camera is triggering late: aim it at roughly 45 degrees to the trail rather than straight down it, because PIR sensors detect movement across their field far better than movement toward them.
Batteries drain far faster than expected
Check false triggers first — every empty frame costs power. Then flash use, since infrared draws heavily. On cellular cameras, weak signal is a major cause: the radio stays powered up longer searching on every upload attempt, including failed ones, so a camera in poor coverage drains much faster than the same camera in good coverage. Cold weather reduces capacity on any chemistry, and alkalines much more than lithium.
Cellular camera takes photos but nothing arrives on the phone
Pull the SD card first. Photos on the card and nothing in the app means capture is fine and the problem is transmission — signal at the camera, an inactive plan, an exhausted photo allowance, or an account problem. Signal at the road is not signal at the camera. If the card is empty too, it is a capture fault and the sections above apply.
How cellular transmission actually works
Camera will not turn on at all
Fresh cells, correct orientation, clean contacts. Check for corrosion in the battery bay and for moisture inside the housing. Disconnect any external battery or solar panel and test on internal cells alone, since a failed external supply can stop the camera drawing from its own batteries.
The faults that are not faults
Three behaviors get reported as defects and are the camera working as designed.
Shorter night range on a no-glow camera. No-glow infrared is invisible, and that invisibility costs range and image quality against low-glow at the same power. It is the trade the design makes.
Detection range well under the advertised figure in warm weather. PIR sensors work on the difference between body heat and background. As that gap narrows, range drops. TrailCamPro, who have tested since 2003, note that a camera’s detection range “could be substantially greater on a 32 degree winter day compared to a 90 degree summer day.” The number on the box is a best case.
App photos looking worse than the card. Cellular cameras send a compressed copy to save data. The full-resolution file is on the SD card, and most apps offer a way to request the original.
When to stop troubleshooting and replace the camera
Open the housing and look for water. Moisture ingress is the most common terminal fault, and it usually follows a cracked seal or a latch that was not fully closed. Corrosion on the battery contacts or the board, or a saturated desiccant pack, points the same way.
To check whether the infrared array itself has died, trigger the camera in the dark and point a phone camera at the front — most phone sensors register infrared and will show the array lighting even on a no-glow model. If nothing fires after fresh lithium cells, the array has failed, and on budget cameras that is rarely economic to repair.
